Effective Waste Management with Hydraulics

Effective Waste Management with Hydraulics

The applications of hydraulics are not limited to a specific industry. You can implement hydraulics in every possible application that needs pushing, lifting, or holding operation. If considering the solid waste management applications, the role of hydraulics is not negligible. For the effective management of solid waste in today’s world, it is necessary to safely collect and dispose of the waste. The hydraulic equipment and machinery used in solid waste management applications will help to adopt environmentally safe practices. More details on this effective waste management strategy are discussed here.

Collecting residential and industrial wastes and properly transferring it into a plant for disposing of is the most critical function of waste management. Specialized vehicles are used for collecting the trash and managing it. There will be different types of solid wastes and its collection and management will be different. But, with hydraulic machines and attachments in vehicles, it is possible to handle all these operations simply. Some advantages of hydraulic products in this waste management and disposal industry are:

  • Reduce human interactions and improve hygiene
  • Minimized maintenance cost
  • Reduced noise level
  • Fuel-saving
  • Extended life

If considering the role of hydraulics in waste management, the first priority is provided to garbage collecting vehicles on which different attachments are connected. There are different vehicles designed for automatically collecting garbages from bins/containers and to unload them from trucks. Some of the important vehicles with hydraulic functions are:

Dustcarts: A dustcart is a garbage collecting truck that can collect and transport industrial and residential garbages from the waste bin. The hydraulic arm attached with the dustcart will lift the garbage bin safety and the gravity will help to unload this garbage into the hopper. It is the hydraulic cylinder located at the arm, that holds and lifts the garbage bin. Also, the telescopic hydraulic cylinder that is installed under the hopper will help to raise it and unload it at the plant.

Trash Compactors: A trash compactor used in the waste management industry will reduce the size of the garbage material. Normally, trash compactors are available in many shapes and sizes, and also it is powered by hydraulics. The working of the compactor is based on pascal’s law. For crushing the material, the compactor makes use of centrifugal force, extra down pressure, and vibration.

Street sweepers: Street sweeper is the vehicle used for cleaning the street with minimum human interaction. This vehicle will be equipped with water jets and spinning brushes. The jet will spray water at high pressure to clean the pavements and prevent the dust particles. The spinning brushes attached will scrub the dirt away. Here, a hydraulic pump is used for pumping water at high pressure through jets.

High-tip buckets: The high-tip bucket is an attachment that can load a large volume of solid waste into trucks or hoppers. The system uses two double-acting hydraulic rams for lifting the bucket to the desired height by improving safety of operation. The hydraulic cross-line relief valves will protect the bucket’s hydraulic functions.

Crushers: Large concrete blocks that remain after the demolition of buildings is also a solid waste that needs to be managed properly. With crushers, it is possible to reduce the size of these large blocks and by this, it will be easier to load and unload the waste materials.

Transfer Station: The transfer station is an intermediary location where the waste collected by local vehicles will be dumped temporarily and then it will be loaded to larger vehicles. Static compactor and hook loaders are some common equipment in the transfer station. Also, there are many other hydraulic applications used in transfer stations for loading and unloading purposes.
