What Are the Available Hydraulic Jack Types?

A jack is one of the useful tools in different industries. The task of the hydraulic jack is to lift heavy loads easily using a simple device. Hydraulics that utilize pressurized fluid for operation, requires only a small applied force. A common application of hydraulic jack is in the automobile industry for lifting cars and other vehicles for changing tyres and performing repairs under the car. When the user applies the power to the jack handle, pressurized fluid will be pumped from the reservoir to the hydraulic cylinder, and then to lift the heavy load connected to the surface.

Hydraulic jacks provide various advantages over other jacks. The key advantages of a hydraulic jack include low space requirements, ease of use, safety, and minimum applied effort. With a hydraulic jack, a technician/mechanic/operator can lift objects easily and can hold them at the locked position safely for a long time. Hydraulic jacks can be mainly classified into two: floor jack and bottle jack. Other common jacks include a scissor jack, hi-lift jack, motorcycle jack, and trolley jack.

There are certain factors that need to be considered while selecting a hydraulic jack for a certain application. This includes load capacity, clearance, orientation, lift height, automatic/manual operation, and the specific application of the selected hydraulic jack.

Bottle Jack: Bottle jack, also called the hand jack is mostly used by individuals for simple uses like lifting vehicles for roadside service or inspection. This compact, portable, and lightweight jack utilizes hydraulic power for lifting the vehicle or other loads easily.
The bottle jack design contains common elements or components like a larger piston (plunger), small piston, housing, check valve, hydraulic cuff and lever. The working of hydraulic jack is completely based on Pascal’s Law. The compatible fluid is placed in the reservoir between two cylinders, the outer cylinder and the inner cylinder. When the pump plunger moves upward, the oil is sucked into the pump cylinder by an inlet passage. For download movement of the pump piston, the oil is pressurized and it flows through another passage into the working cylinder to lift the ram. The check valves in the form of steel balls is for preventing the flow of fluid back from the working cylinder into the pump cylinder.

Trolley/Floor Jack: Both the trolley jack and floor jack has certain minor differences. But, we can include this in the same section because of its application for lifting vehicles. This portable jack contains a hydraulic cylinder positioned horizontally and it is available in different weight classes. Ease of use, low to the ground, and improved stability are key benefits of the floor jack.
The important parts of the floor jack are lifting control, oil valve, supporting point, operating handle and wheel(rotating & fixed). The working of the floor jack is purely based on the hydraulic system implemented. I.e; pressurized fluid will flow from the reservoir towards the cylinder placed horizontally, which makes the jack lift the load.
