Electrical, mechanical and hydraulic are the three methods for power transmitting. A combination of these three methods is used in most applications for efficient working. These methods are selected depending on particular applications. 

Hydraulic systems transmit power by using the pressure of an incompressible fluid within a sealed system. Normally this incompressible fluid will be oil. In every basic design of a hydraulic system, there will be two pistons connected to a common cylinder. While applying pressure on anyone piston the fluid moves through the cylinder and enter into the second piston. The principle behind this hydraulic system concept is Pascal's law (F ÷ {P x A}). 

Applications of hydraulic systems are everywhere. It ranges from water pistons to aircraft. Hydraulic systems are used in the lifting equipment's (hydraulic jacks, wheelchair lifts), Hydraulic presses (Used in car crushers), aircraft's and boats (used in wing flaps and rudders), brake system and power steering of cars and trucks etc. In aircraft, hydraulic systems are used to move and actuate landing gear, flaps, and brakes. For larger aircraft's, flight controls, spoilers, thrust reversers, etc. use this.

Hydraulic System Advantages

Every system has its own merits and demerits. It is selected depending on the application it wants to perform. At present, hydraulics are widely used because they can effectively transfer energy or power to remote locations with less moving parts and high efficiency. A hydraulic system is characterized as an easy, flexible system with agile movements. Here are few advantages of hydraulic systems:

  • Hydraulic systems are easy to control and accurate. Because, a system operator can easily start, stop, accelerate and slow down the system using simple levers and push buttons.
  • Hydraulic systems are simpler and easier to maintain because these systems use less moving parts.
  • Only hydraulic systems can deliver constant torque or force regardless of speed changes.
  • Easy to spot leakages of a hydraulic system.
  • Centralized lubrication systems that automatically lubricate and protect the right points.
  • A large amount of power can be transmitted through the hydraulic system using small flexible hoses and tubes.
  • These systems do not cause sparks. So, these systems are safe to use in chemical plants and mines.
  • Hydraulic systems have the ability to maintain its viscosity of airworthiness, its density and the temperature of the fluid in a very hot environment.
  • Using hydraulics power can be transmitted through flexible, varying lines.
  • The amount of force on the driving system can be adjusted with force multiplication. 
  • Hydraulic components allow micrometric speed variations.
  • Minimize undesirable noises.
  •  Easy to repair major machines in Hydraulics like Hydraulic Rams, direction control valves, gear pumps, and motors.

Some of the disadvantages of the hydraulic system include:

  • Hydraulic fluids are the main requirement of any hydraulic system. Leakage of these fluids will create environmental problems and safety issues.
  • Contaminants present in the hydraulic fluid will damage the system performance and productivity. Hence, it requires continuous filtration.
  • Wrong selection of hydraulic fluid for a system will damage the components.
  • Proper maintenance is required.
