You might have seen bouncing cars in movies or car shows. It is quite interesting to watch a car dancing with quick raising and lowering or moving in different angles. The technology utilized for bouncing a car by performing lots of modifications is called car hydraulics. It is not a simple process that can be done from any automobile workshops. Instead, it is a costly process done by experts. The car that installed car hydraulics is called Lowrider. The lowriders are created by utilizing many cylinders and every cylinder will cost a minimum of approximately 500 USD. This expensive and intense customization on lowriders will allow you to ride front, back, side to side, and upon three wheels.
By applying some interior and exterior modifications, classic large cars from the 1950s can be converted into lowriders. Lowrider cars will sit lower to the floor and can be raised in a button press. Such modified lowriders are not able to ride at a speed more than 15Km/hour. Because, over a certain speed limit, there will be difficulty in controlling the car and will result in maximum damage.
The lowrider will contain at least 3 to 24 switches in the control panel located at the front. Every switch is dedicated to performing specific operations. Any skilled Lowrider operator can safely perform different movements with such cars in shows. Some of the different movements possible with this car include:
- Lifting or lowering the four corners
- Lifting or lowering front or rear
- Lifting or lowering sides
- Lifting or lowering the entire car
- Riding on 3 wheels, and more
All these movements are possible because of the modified hydraulic suspension system in that automobile. The types of hydraulic pumps and its count determine the performance of these lowriders. As a modified hydraulic suspension system, it utilizes the power of hydraulic fluids for lifting and lowering the automobile.
In the flat or original position of the lowrider, the fluid is placed in the hydraulic lines and reservoir at the trunk. When a signal is sent from the control panel, hydraulics begin to work. The pumps, batteries, cylinders, and hydraulic fluid are the factors that determine how car hydraulics work. If the count of pumps, batteries, and cylinders increases, the performance and hopping speed improves along with the increase in the price of customization. Here, the multiple batteries installed in a rack of vehicle’s trunk will power the pumps to operate. The voltage generated by the batteries will play a significant role in improving the speed of car lifts. The electrically powered pumps will pressurize the fluid and pumps it from the reservoir to the cylinders. This pressurized fluid at the cylinder will extract or retract the cylinder piston and corresponding part will be lifted or lowered. To reduce malfunctions due to the bouncing, springs are used for shock-absorbing.

If the lowrider design uses one pump, then it can be used for lifting/lowering the car all at once. If it uses 3 pumps, then hopping is possible and if it contains 4 pumps, each wheel can be elevated/lowered separately.
Lowriders were a trend in most of the countries. The eye-catching dancing and hopping cars will become the major attraction of every place it goes. But it has many drawbacks too. Drawbacks of lowriders include the cost, complex customization, maintenance, huge oil consumption, probability of accidents, speed limitations and more. Also, in some countries over customized Lowriders are illegal.
