JOB CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY

Positions assigned to this class are responsible for performing skilled maintenance and repair mechanic work on a variety of Town equipment and vehicles.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a fully qualified fleet classification in the maintenance and operations job family where tasks and assignments are performed using a variety of procedures and techniques. This is the experienced/journey level that is fully competent in the technical/functional aspects of the assigned role. Work usually involves the application of sound technical principles and best practices associated with planning, diagnosis, troubleshooting, and problem-solving. Incumbents perform varied assignments requiring journey-level knowledge in fleet maintenance.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

The following is intended to describe the core work functions of this classification.  While the level and broad nature of essential duties may not change, specific work tasks will vary over time depending on the Town’s needs.

  • Diagnoses and repairs electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems on a wide range of vehicles, including heavy construction equipment; repairs and adjusts gasoline and diesel engines, fuel systems, transmissions, and other mechanical devices.
  • Performs general mechanical repair work on vehicles, trucks, light equipment, heavy machinery, road machinery, specialized equipment, gasoline/diesel engines, generators, or other automotive/mechanical equipment.
  • Inspects, tests, and diagnoses problems involving various systems/components of vehicles or equipment, such as gasoline/diesel engines, ignition systems, computerized engine controls, electronic fuel injection systems, transmissions, differentials, steering systems, electrical systems, suspension systems, hydraulic systems, brake systems, drive train systems, engine cooling systems, fuel systems, charging systems, starting systems, exhaust systems, emission systems, inflatable restraint systems, heating/air conditioning systems, lighting systems, cameras/recorders, sirens, or horns.
  • Examines vehicles to determine necessary repair or maintenance work; conducts diagnostic computer testing; consults with drivers or equipment operators to obtain input on problems, assists in diagnosing problems, or preventing future problems; determines parts/supplies necessary to conduct repairs.
  • Diagnoses and repairs vehicle component systems and sub-systems for electrical, fuel supply, air conditioning, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, brakes, drive train, suspension, exhaust, and engine cooling systems; performs arc and acetylene welding as required; fabricates and modifies metal parts and components; performs body repair and other metal component repairs; transports equipment from the field to the repair shop facility; performs emergency repairs in the field as required; identifies and reports vehicle problems requiring additional maintenance and repair; elevates more complex repair issues to appropriate individual(s).
  • Performs routine and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment to maximize their life cycle, reduce downtime, and improve the productivity of Town employees; performs specialized repair and maintenance work to bring vehicles and equipment into compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Typical Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (at job entry)

Education and Experience:  

  • Vocational Degree and four years of a combination of specialized mechanic experience in medium and heavy equipment, as well as passenger cars and trucks, and repairing and maintaining heavy-duty trucks and construction equipment; must possess and maintain a valid class A Commercial
  • Driver's License (CDL); or an equivalent combination of directly related education and experience.

LICENSING/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS 

  • Driver's License;
  • Commercial Driver's License with Class A Tanker Endorsement within 6 months of hire;
  • ADEQ emissions license within 6 months of hire;
  • Maintain all certifications/licenses required at job entry.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position has been identified as a safety-sensitive position by Human Resources, per State and/or Federal Law. Upon a conditional offer of employment, the candidate selected will be required to undergo testing for alcohol and controlled substances within twenty-four (24) hours of acceptance of the offer.

  • Methods, materials, tools, and standard practice for the installation, operation, and maintenance of fleet equipment, devices, or systems;
  • Operation, maintenance, and repair of fleet equipment, systems, and vehicles;
  • General mechanics, including methods, materials, tools, and standard practices;
  • Computer-controlled systems related to engines, transmissions, body, etc.;
    Specialty areas such as hydraulics, pumps, A/C, gas and diesel engines, welding;
  • Equipment, tools, and materials relevant to the area of assignment;
  • Occupational hazards and safe working practices;
  • Applicable Federal, state, and county OSHA regulations;
  • Standard office equipment including the computer and programs relevant to the performance of applicable duties and responsibilities.

SKILLS

  • Diagnosing and repairing operational problems on light, medium, and heavy equipment and vehicles;
  • Preparing and maintaining accurate work records of maintenance work;
  • Performing manual/physical activities;
  • Reading and interpreting technical and operational documents, blueprints, and diagrams;
  • Using computers and related software applications;
  • Operating testing and monitoring applicable equipment;
  • Operating a motor vehicle, including heavy trucks;
  • Estimating time and material requirements of work projects;
  • Using applicable hand and power tools and equipment related to the  area of assignment;
  • Communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, and other interested parties sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
