Hydraulics Designer

Hydraulics Designer

Location: Lively, ON
Business Unit: Hard Rock
Reports to: Hydraulic Design Lead
Department: Drills Engineering

About the Role:

Are you passionate about designing and optimizing hydraulic systems for underground heavy mobile mining equipment? Do you thrive in hands-on environments and enjoy troubleshooting and testing? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you! As a Hydraulic Designer, you will be responsible for the selection, design, and validation of complete hydraulic systems. You will create hydraulic schematics, develop component selections with suppliers, and support new product development by executing design validation plans. This role involves the practical execution of designs onto machines, ensuring access for service, maintenance, and operation.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Design and Analysis: Create full hydraulic schematics for underground heavy mobile mining equipment. Optimize hydraulic component selection with vendors to achieve product cost targets and machine performance. Design and validate hydraulic systems, including hose routing, valve assemblies, and component mounting.
  • Hands-On Work: Develop test and validation criteria for new products and perform such testing.
  • Provide hands-on technical guidance to the factory technical support team when troubleshooting hydraulic systems in the field. Perform practical execution of designs onto machines to ensure no damage or wear on hoses due to poor routing.
  • Technical Support: Provide technical guidance and specifications to the technical training team when supporting the development of training content. Work closely with operations, manufacturing engineering, and purchasing during new product prototype builds or when processing component replacements in current product models.
  • Customer Support:  Provide hydraulic troubleshooting support to the factory, aftermarket, and sales teams for products at customer sites. Travel to customer sites for product testing, troubleshooting, and support as required.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or College Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience designing, sizing, and calculating for underground heavy mobile equipment hydraulic systems, including simulation, validation, and troubleshooting.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working with vendors and selecting hydraulic components and systems for underground heavy mobile equipment.
  • Hands-on experience with testing, validation, commissioning, and troubleshooting hydraulic systems required.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and SolidWorks. Experience using MATLAB and Automation Studio is an asset.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude to provide troubleshooting support to manufacturing operations and aftermarket field teams.
  • General understanding of hydraulic system interdependencies in mobile equipment, including electrical, powertrain, and pneumatics.
  • Familiarity with ISO, ANSI, CSA, and other global safety regulations required in the design of products.
  • Understanding of engineering change notices (ECNs), engineering change requests (ECRs), non-conformance reports (NCRs), risk assessments (RAs), design failure mode and effects analysis (DFMEA), and process failure mode and effects analysis (PFMEA).
