Purpose of the position

We are seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineer to join our team in the Port Services industry. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting structural inspections of port equipment, including ship-to-shore cranes, gantry cranes, and rubber-tired gantry cranes, and preparing detailed reports on inspection findings. This role is critical for maintaining the safety and functionality of port operations equipment and requires a combination of technical expertise, problem-solving, and hands-on experience.

Main tasks and responsibilities

  • Conduct structural inspections of port equipment including ship-to-shore cranes, gantry cranes, and rubber-tired gantry cranes.    
  • Identify and assess wear, damage, or defects in equipment and recommend necessary repairs or maintenance actions.    
  • Prepare and submit detailed reports of inspections, including findings, recommendations, and timelines for repairs.    
  • Collaborate with other engineers and maintenance teams to ensure timely and safe resolutions of equipment issues.    
  • Ensure that all inspections and maintenance activities comply with relevant Australian Standards and safety regulations.    
  • Utilize AutoCAD or similar to model equipment and design modifications as required.    
  • Engage in practical tasks to assist with repairs or installations as needed.    
  • Apply mechanical theory and related knowledge to test and modify operational machinery and equipment.    
  • Read, understand, and interpret operating manuals, parts manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings.   
  • Ensure all equipment is compliant with Australian Standards and safety regulations.

What you’ll need to succeed
Qualifications and Experience:    

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline.    
  • Minimum of 3 years of industry experience as an engineer.    
  • Previous experience within the Port Services environment is highly desirable.    
  • Must be an Australian citizen and eligible to gain and maintain an Australian security clearance.

Skills and Expertise:    

  • Ability to assess the structural integrity of the crane, including the jib, gantry, and supports.    
  • Ability to interpret and modify technical drawings and blueprints    
  • Ability to quickly identify root causes and implement effective solutions    
  • In-depth knowledge of safety protocols, particularly related to working at heights and around heavy machinery    
  • Experience with hydraulics and electrical systems would be advantageous.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on approach to engineering tasks.    
  • Understanding of industry standards (such as AS, ISO) and safety regulations that apply to cranes.    
  • Good time management skills and the ability to work efficiently under deadlines.    
  • Strong IT and computer systems skills are an advantage.    
  • Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills with a proactive attitude toward practical problem-solving
