Position Responsibilities:

Determines safe lift parameters and follows established procedures.
Documents lift plan as required any time the lift exceeds 75% of the crane’s capacity for any given circumstance.

Operates cranes for building construction and movement of cargo or equipment.
Is responsible for the safe and technically proficient operation of heavy equipment such as bulldozers, articulating loaders, excavators, graders, backhoes, fork-lifts, telehandlers, snow blasters, tracked agricultural tractors, piste bully, dump trucks, snow moving and grooming equipment, etc.
Performs daily equipment checks to ensure all equipment is properly maintained and in safe operating condition.  Notates any repair or maintenance needs on the daily checklist and notifies Foreman of these items daily.  Checks all fluids and immediately notifies the Vehicle Maintenance Facility of any deficiencies and takes care of them prior to operation
Safely operate various types of cranes to lift and move material.  
Rigs equipment, machinery, and material using slings, chain falls, come-along, and other rigging gear as required and in accordance with all safety protocols
Identifies and creates work orders for general maintenance needs according to manufacturer recommendations or as directed by the Vehicle Maintenance Facility and Fleet Operations leadership.
Completes Job Hazard Analysis (JHAs) as required
Tracks equipment hours daily and notifies fleet operations office foreman any time equipment is within 25 hours of its PM due hours.
Completes daily, weekly, and monthly crane inspections as required.
Performs general duties as required in support of Fleet Operations and ASC Operations Division metrics (as provided by the supervisor).
Complies with all ASC Environmental Health & Safety and Quality Assurance requirements and goals.
Provides documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate compliance documentation.
Works to achieve ASC goals and contractual commitments.
Snow shoveling, ice-chipping, and other forms of manual labor required. 
Performs physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of tall equipment and vehicles, crawling as needed, working outdoors in extreme cold, and walking long distances daily.
Implements and maintains a safe workplace program and ensures that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.
Read and understand the manufacturer’s operating manual for each piece of equipment prior to its operation.
Accurately records time worked, and equipment hours used daily in Maximo and on timesheet.
Performs other duties as required.

Required Qualifications:

High School diploma or equivalent
NCO Certification, or equivalent, in crane operations
Four years of experience as a heavy equipment operator (such as those outlined above)
A minimum of 200 hours of routine crane operation

Expected Skills and Competencies:

Proficient in manipulating crane controls to regulate speed and direction of crane and hoist movement safely and according to written, verbal, or signal instructions.
Proficient in performing safety inspections of crane, heavy equipment, wire rope, hooks, slings and rigging and identifying, documenting and reporting any issues.  
Proficient in performing pre-operational inspections and calculating crane capacities and weight to prepare for safe rigging and hoisting.
Proficient in operating crane in accordance with signals from helper.
Knowledgeable of OSHA safety regulations pertaining to crane operation
Ability to read, interpret, understand and follow crane lift plans and load charts
Expected to be proficient in quickly and safely responding to emergencies.
Ability to inspect and document rigging.
Experienced in the proper use of appropriate personal protective equipment for each task

Preferred:

Experience in construction and/or maintenance of commercial and/or industrial facilities.
High school graduate or equivalent.
Prior experience operating equipment in extreme cold and windy conditions.
General knowledge and understanding of project schedules.
Prior snow moving and grooming experience.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office.
Experienced in operating a commercial vehicle in compliance with all DOT regulations.
Class A CDL preferred
Prior experience working in austere environments.
Ability to thrive in an equipment and resource limited environment.
Ability to work in an environment with regular Re-Directs and Change Orders in a calm, collected and respectful manner.  With McMurdo Station under a complete rebuild new tasking, weather and priorities are the norm rather than the exception.

Physical and/or Other Requirements:

Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica
Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer
Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF
Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.
Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.
Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.
Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States
Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
