Kawasaki Heavy Industries is promoting a sustainable aquaculture system to enhance food security by producing safe, secure, and delicious marine products. The project is part of Japan's overall endeavor to create land-based aquaculture technologies that have low environmental footprints and provide a stable seafood supply. Collaborations with educational institutions, including the University of the Ryukyus and Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, are directed towards combining agriculture and aquaculture through technologies such as salt-tolerant crops and seawater aquaponics. These innovations are all part of a broader trend in Japan towards implementing onshore aquaculture methods, which provide closed environments for fish culture with decreased risks compared to conventional marine aquaculture and contribute to the country's food security ambitions.
