New hydraulic crane for Port of Ipswich under £6m investment by Associated British Ports

Associated British Ports (ABP) is investing £6 million in new hydraulic cranes from Finnish manufacturer Mantsinen for five of its ports, including Ipswich. Notably, the UK will receive its first installation of the world’s largest hydraulic crane, the 280-tonne Mantsinen 200M, at the Port of Garston near Liverpool.

Other cranes ordered through Mantsinen’s UK distributor, Cooper Specialised Handling, include:

A 95R tracked crane for the Port of Ipswich

A 90M wheeled crane for the Port of Teignmouth, Devon

Two 120M cranes for the ports of Swansea and King’s Lynn

Andrew Harston, ABP’s Short Sea Ports director, emphasized the company’s commitment to customer service through investment in new equipment and technology tailored to each port’s specific handling needs such as vessel sizes and load types.

Tony Rooney, managing director of Cooper Specialised Handling, explained that these were five separate contracts allowing each port the freedom to select their preferred equipment, resulting in all choosing Mantsinen cranes independently.

The delivery of the cranes will begin next month and forms part of ABP’s broader five-year, £1 billion investment program across its 21 ports. This year alone, ABP has invested over £2 million in the Port of Ipswich, including five new MRS cargo handling grabs, forklifts, and loading shovels to support increased dry bulk trade.
